DESCRIPTION & HISTORY

Cypress is the common name for various coniferous trees or shrubs that belong to the Cupressaceae family.  They are native to the northern temperate regions of southern Europe and western Asia. 

 

Most cypress oil is made from Cupressus sempervirens, also known as Mediterranean cypress.  This medicinal tree has many botanical features.  It was also well known and used by the ancient Egyptians. 

The ancient Greeks dedicated the tree to Pluto, god of the underworld.  Thus, the use of cypress trees in cemeteries.  Cypress essential oil is derived from the pine needles of this tall evergreen tree.
