Thus began my journey into the world of magnesium and the transdermal supplementation that eventually dissipated all my symptoms without the use of medications.
I had digestive issues and could not get any significant results from magnesium tablets and powders, so I decided to order some magnesium chloride flakes direct from Europe. To my delight and surprise, magnesium bathing and foot-soaking easily and quickly dissipated the heart arrhythmia and calmed down my nervous system.
In addition to calming and regulating my heart arrhythmia, transdermal magnesium therapy also helped Peter’s blood pressure to move into the normal range. Peter had been on blood pressure lowering drugs since his quintuple heart bypass operation three years earlier. After a number of weeks of magnesium soaking (minimum 3 times per week), he discovered that the medications were lowering his blood pressure too much! Eventually he was able to wean off the drugs completely and use nutrition to maintain a healthy balance and blood pressure in the normal range (with doctor’s supervision).
It was then that I had the ‘light bulb’ moment. I remembered what the cardiologist had told me about so many other people having these issues (heart arrhythmia) and suspected that it may be a huge opportunity to bring magnesium chloride salts into Australia and market them. The potential risk of this new venture seemed not as great as the risk to keep plugging away at the magazine business, so after some serious ruminations we decided to make the transition. One door closed and another opened.
We took a deep breath, prayed hard and began the importing, packaging and distribution of food grade magnesium chloride flakes. In 2008 there were no packets of magnesium chloride available for sale on any store shelves. We were ground zero in Australia in the local supply and promotion of magnesium chloride as a transdermal nutritional supplement.
The image of ‘Elektra’ in our Elektra Magnesium brand was chosen from the painting collection produced by my daughter, Candice Rogers. The image evoked a calm and meditative feeling: beautiful, goddess-like and serene, with a marine theme. It seemed so perfect to reflect magnesium’s calming effects, as well as the salt water source of the magnesium chloride flakes. The name Elektra sounded similar to ‘electrolyte’ and also made the goddess in the water image come alive.
As my health made huge progress with regular magnesium bathing and foot-soaking I thought to myself, okay, that’s it: Job’s done. However, I was amazed to find that each year since 2008, with regular daily magnesium use, I still experience subtle improvements. I also have much more stamina and can work long hours with good recovery. Magnesium helps me to cope with stress much better, as I feel stronger, in control, confident, and focussed. And of course, I sailed through menopause without much ado: no night sweats, no meltdowns, more energy, and better sleep.
I now understand on a deeper level that we need magnesium constantly because the body’s use of electrical supply is constant. Every time your heart beats it uses magnesium in the process. Magnesium replenishment is as important as water replenishment. Just as you can’t drink a week’s worth of water all on one day and nothing for the rest of the week, the body also needs very regular magnesium nutrition daily and even multiple times daily.
Since only a dilute amount of magnesium can get through the gut wall efficiently – such as what would be in food or mineral water - transdermal absorption offers the best opportunity for high amounts of magnesium absorption if deficiency is high. The skin is an ideal nutritional reservoir of electrolytes, moisture, and fats. It has the capacity to take up more magnesium and hold it in reserve until the body uses it up.
