Oregano (Origanum Vulgare), also called origanum or wild marjoram, is an aromatic herb from the mint (Lamiaceae) family. Oregano revered for its high antioxidant properties and dried culinary leave with small, purple flowers. It is native to temperate Western and Southwestern Eurasia and the Mediterranean region, where it has been used for thousands of years to add flavor to Mediterranean dishes.

The Greeks and Romans associated oregano with joy and happiness. The name comes from the Greek words “oros,”meaning mountain and “ganos,” meaning brightness.

Oregano’s primary chemical components are carvacrol and thymol, which are phenols that possess antioxidant properties when ingested.
