The Global Energy Parliament is pleased to announce that its Global Best Award for Protection of Natural Wealth goes to Her Excellency Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, GCSK., CSK., PhD., DSc., President of the Republic of Mauritius.

An international jury unanimously selected Her Excellency as the winner, in recognition of her efforts to protect the natural wealth of the world through scientific and technological advancements.

Her Excellency is the first female president of Mauritius. She has been called Africa’s eco-warrior and is moving to create opportunity and growth for her island home. Prior to joining the State House, Her Excellency was the Managing Director of the Centre International de Développement Pharmaceutique (CIDP) Research and Innovation as well as professor of organic chemistry with an endowed chair at the University of Mauritius.

She has long been a leading biodiversity scientist studying and validating the flora of Mauritius, one of the world's key biodiversity hotspots. “My island nation of 1.3 million people lies in the Indian Ocean about 1,100 kilometres east of Madagascar. I was elected by parliament in 2015, and am charged with upholding Mauritians’ fundamental rights and helping our institutions. I believe key to both tasks is our unique biodiversity,” she wrote in Nature magazine.

She has authored and/or co-edited 28 books and several book chapters and scientific articles in the field of biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.

About the Award

The GEP offers the Global Best Award in honour of the global best individual, institution, or movement, in a particular thematic area.

The Global Best Award is the highest honour offered by the Global Energy Parliament. It is selected by an international jury headed by Dr. C.V. Ananda Bose (Former Secretary to the Government of India).

World celebrities in the thematic area of the GEP are the chosen recipients of this Award. In 2016, the Award was given to His Excellency Sir James Mancham, KBE, the Founding President of the Republic of Seychelles, by the Hon. Prime Minister of Sri Lanka in Colombo, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to global peace.

The Global Energy Parliament (GEP) is an international body of citizens committed to a self-sustaining, peaceful and happy existence for human beings and the universe. GEP was founded by His Holiness Jagadguru Swami Isa, head of the Isa Viswa Prajnana Trust (IVPT), an international organization holding Consultative Status to the United Nations ECOSOC.
