In an era where the average life expectancy is in focus, pursuing a long, healthy life is more relevant than ever. The concept that "age is just a number" underpins a growing movement dedicated to extending lifespan and enhancing the quality of those added years. The longevity revolution combines scientific research with practical lifestyle changes, emphasizing that how we live significantly impacts how long we live.

At the 2024 Miami Swim Week, first time in history of modeling, the runway was graced by the inspiring presence of a 96-year-old model, a striking testament to the adage that "age is just a number." It was so inspiring to me. Her confident stride and radiant energy captivated the audience, challenging conventional notions of beauty and aging. This remarkable moment highlighted the inclusivity and evolving standards of the fashion industry and the potential for vitality and self-expression at any age.

Her participation was a powerful reminder that age should never be a barrier to pursuing one's passions and dreams, and it inspires individuals of all generations to embrace life with vigor and enthusiasm.

Here are 5 essential tips to help you embrace a long and healthy life.

1. Positive Energy

Positive energy is a cornerstone of longevity. Numerous studies have shown that a positive outlook on life can profoundly affect health and longevity. For instance, research published in the Journal of Aging Research found that individuals with a positive attitude towards aging lived 7.5 years longer on average than those with a negative outlook. Positive energy helps to reduce stress, which is known to cause chronic diseases such as heart disease and a weakened immune system.  By fostering a mindset of gratitude, optimism, and resilience, one can improve their mental health, boost their immune system, and increase their overall life satisfaction. Mindfulness practices, meditation, and maintaining social connections are effective ways to cultivate positive energy.

 2. Healthy Eating

Nutrition plays a crucial role in promoting longevity. Sunshine, daylight, clean air, and a diet rich in quality proteins, vegetables, fruits, essential fatty acids in balance, minerals, vitamins, and enzymes are vital for optimal body function.  Because of biochemical individuality and limited space in this article, this is only a general brief of nutrition basics.

While a vast array of nutrients in balance from the categories above are necessary, magnesium is an example of one vital mineral.  This mineral can be quickly absorbed transdermally (through the skin) via magnesium cream, oil, or salt baths. Transdermal magnesium avoids the common issue of gastrointestinal distress, such as diarrhea, often reported with oral magnesium supplements. According to a review in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, high doses of oral magnesium can cause a laxative effect because unabsorbed magnesium in the intestines draws excess water into the bowel and overstimulates the peristaltic action.

Transdermal magnesium allows direct absorption through the skin, bypassing the digestive system entirely. This method ensures a steadier absorption of magnesium into the bloodstream, allowing the body to better utilize the mineral for essential functions.

Magnesium is vital for over 600 biochemical reactions in the body, including muscle, nerve, and kidney functions, blood glucose control, and bone health. According to the National Institutes of Health, adequate magnesium intake lowers the risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. Additionally, reducing the intake of processed foods and sugars can decrease the risk of obesity and related health conditions, further supporting a longer, healthier life.

3. Regular Chiropractic Adjustments

Regular chiropractic adjustments, especially with a practitioner certified by the 100 Year Lifestyle (100YL) program, can contribute to overall well-being and longevity. Chiropractic care focuses on maintaining spinal health, which is integral to the function of the nervous system. The 100YL approach emphasizes prevention and optimal health through regular adjustments, which can help reduce pain, improve mobility, and enhance the body's ability to heal. A study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that individuals receiving regular chiropractic care reported better health and well-being than those who did not. By maintaining spinal alignment and nervous system health, chiropractic care can help prevent age-related decline and improve quality of life.

The 100 Year Lifestyle (100YL) is a transformative approach to health and wellness pioneered by Dr. Eric Plasker, DC.
