The history of mental issues goes back to the theory of demonic possession. It was believed that demons took possession of a person and was responsible for the person’s depression or behavior. Hippocrates used the imbalance of humors as cause of mental illness. All diseases and disabilities supposedly resulted from an excess or deficit of one of these four humors *1 (black bile, yellow bile, phlegm, and blood).

Sigmund Freud’s theories proposed that unconscious motivations and early developmental influences were essential to understanding behavior.*2

When we look at the models being used in the 21st century, there has not been a great deal of change. Many therapists are still looking for demons, imbalances and influences as the cause of mental health issues. A difficult birth, genetics, negative events, and brain chemistry are popular theories as causes of at least one mental health issue – Schizophrenia.
