Dissections of the Human Body

by Dr. Eric Plasker, DC

It was in 1473, at the age of 18, that Michelangelo began to perform dissections of the human body. From a very young age he believed that human beings were Gods most perfect creation. As such, for artists to capture or imitate the human body was arts highest goal and the closest mortal artists could get to God.

Before his time, and for all the centuries since up to the present day, the human body has fascinated not only artists but scientists and researchers alike. Since Michelangelo there have been many breakthroughs in our understanding.

Yet, to this day there remain many, many mysteries regarding our health, biology, and the systems that keep us alive. Still there are many aspects of life and the human body that scientists still dont fully understand. These mysteries remind us of the complexities of life and the importance of trusting in principles that have stood the test of time.

Unanswered Questions

In addition to us not knowing what we dont know,” what we do know that we dont know touches on a lot of topics. Just some of the current mysteries are:

• Why are there so many documented incidences of belief healing? The placebo effect demonstrates that the mind can influence the body in profound ways, often mimicking or even surpassing the effects of treatments. Yet, science has yet to fully understand the mechanisms behind this phenomenon or why it works better for some people than others.

•   Whats the story with aging? As The 100 Year Lifestyle has have long said, stop blaming age. Some people age gracefully and live at 100% for 100 years or more until their last breath. Meanwhile, others decline rapidly and, unfortunately, painfully. Its a fact that the biological processes behind aging are complex, directly affected by lifestyle choices, and to a lesser extent genetics. Currently, science has a preponderance of theories, not a comprehensive understanding.

How does the brain give rise to consciousness, self-awareness, and thoughts? Despite advances in neuroscience, understanding the very essence of what makes us human remains one of the greatest scientific challenges.

Quick Fixes

Its human nature to look for the quick fix. In sciences quest to solve these mysteries, new pills, products, and processes are created that promise miraculous results. And, unfortunately, there are always people who dont learn from history.

They jump on the bandwagon before these quick fixes have stood the test of time. Cant think of any examples? You need to look no further than the once popular and all too recent lobotomies (yes) and doctor recommended smoking (again, yes).

This is why the best health advice often circles back to principles that are simple, time-tested, and rooted in Nature and common sense. Quick fixes may offer temporary relief, but they rarely address the underlying causes of health challenges.
